Beit Eliahu Synagogue - Belmonte

An identity kept hidden, but alive.

The Beit Eliahu Synagogue is a modern building, inaugurated in 1996, precisely 500 years after the decree prohibiting Judaism in Portugal.

Starring at the castle, and following through the Roman road, you will arrive at the Jewish quarter, with Direita Street. At Fonte da Rosa Street, you will find the Synagogue in a small promontory on the valley. With rectilinear forms, the Synagogue's traditional arrangement provides for a separation between the sexes, the women staying in the balcony on the top floor.

The community of Belmonte has a rabbi who resides there, and the practising Jews in the weekly ceremonies and festivities frequently visit the Synagogue.
