The roots of Póvoa de Varzim have always been linked to the sea, with the wide and welcoming natural cove functioning as a privileged space for fishing, coastal trade and shipbuilding. The community settled here received a charter from D. Dinis, in 1308, and from D. Manuel, in 1514, it got involved in the adventure of the Portuguese Empire, but it was always in fishing which supported its livelihood, having become the largest maritime fish square in the north and center of the country, during the 18th and 19th centuries. Currently, the sea remains the central character of the city, reinforcing its importance as a seaside resort and the Ways of Saint James assume greater importance in the tourist life of the city. With points of interest that will mark the pilgrims' memory until they reach Esposende.
