The Portuguese Way of Saint James - Inland offers walkers a spiritual journey through unique landscapes, historical legacies, cultural heritage and traditions. The experience is a fusion between the territorial and personal interiority of those walking each stage with an attentive eye and a sense of feeling every step, and all of their surroundings: from Beira Alta, by way of the Alto Douro Wine Region (classed as Unesco World Heritage), before entering the region of Trás-os-Montes and finally reaching Alto Tâmega, with Spain already visible on the horizon.
Hills and mountains, rivers and springs, and villages and monuments are all features of the Inland Way as it crosses eight municipalities in central and northern Portugal: Viseu, Castro Daire, Lamego, Régua, Santa Marta de Penaguião, Vila Real, Vila Pouca de Aguiar and Chaves.
Dating back to mediaeval times, this pilgrimage route covers a distance of 214 km. Divided into eleven stages, it takes walkers through secluded villages, surrounded by nature in its purest state, to cities replete with stories and classified monuments. The moment when it crosses the River Douro is one of wonder, as the eyes feast on the unique and unrivalled magic of this magnificent heritage.
This is a path where gastronomy and wine abound, so finding places to savour traditional Portuguese food is easy. Mass tourism has not yet discovered this route replete with legends and traditions and rich in the generosity and genuineness of its people.
The Portuguese Inland Way is synonymous with a unique experience, in a region with so much to discover.
Have a wonderful time on the Way!
